Western Wednesdays – Western Bound: Traveling by Covered Wagon

Children will step back in time to better understand the pioneers’ courageous journeys west from Independence, Missouri on the Oregon Trail. Participants will learn through first-hand experiences such as mapping and journaling their journey, and exploring the museum’s gallery of Old West artifacts. Other immersive activities will include making a burlap-covered journal, playing pioneer bingo, and learning how to draw a horse step-by-step!

Activities recommended for children ages 6 to 14. Families are welcome to drop in between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Children can choose which activities they’d like to participate in. They day’s activities will follow the below timeline:

  • 10:15 a.m. – Meet in the theater for a presentation on traveling by covered wagon
  • 10:55 a.m. – Gather in the lobby prior to being escorted to the learning center for a lesson in how to draw a horse in motion
  • Noon – Explore in-gallery activities by the museum’s bison station: play pioneer bingo, decide what you’d bring in your pioneer trunk, journal the journey westward, cut out and color a pioneer paper doll

$5 per person for adults and children ages six and older. Free for children 5 and under.
